Hi Andrew,
We're evaluating several parts for use in future models, but haven't resolved the final set. If you want to evaluate as well, here are some options:
For side-looking parts, you can try:
this emitter with this phototransistor, (spectrally compatible, but not optimal) or
this emitter with this phototransistor (spectrally optimal, but wider angle of view).
If your design allows you to have top-looking parts, you have many more choices.
For instance,
this and this (3mm package),
or
this and this (5mm package, very narrow beam).
More generally, you can filter through these emitters and these phototransistors. Make sure the spectra match, the emission/viewing angle is narrow, and the emitter forward voltage is ~1.5V. In general, the closer the specs are to this and this, the better.
FYI, we have a sizable stock of both parts for manufacturing, so we will be able to continue providing the current port and lickometer models until we have validated a suitable replacement.
I hope this helps,
-Josh
